Μείωση ασφαλιστικών εισφορών 2027: θα τη δεις στο μισθοδοτικό σου;
If you work in Greece, a decision currently being weighed in Athens could determine what will be credited to your bank account in January 2027. The Ministry of Labor and Social Security has put on the table a proposal to reduce social security contributions by half to one percentage point, and the detail that changes everything, namely whether the reduction goes exclusively to the employer or is shared with the employee, will decide whether you ultimately feel it in your net salary.
The number in the title sounds abstract. The consequence is not. On a salary of 1,500 euros, the difference between the two scenarios is the difference between having about 7.50 euros per month left with your employer and having 15 euros per month appear on your paycheck. On an annual basis, that's real money for shopping.
What is the government really looking into?
According to a Workenter report, the economic staff is considering a reduction in social security contributions of between 0.5 and 1.0 percentage points, with the Prime Minister expected to announce the final form of the intervention at the Thessaloniki International Fair in September. The proposal was submitted by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security to the Ministry of National Economy, and the prevailing scenario foresees a reduction of 0.5 percentage points as part of a broader package worth almost 2 billion euros.
If it enters into force on 1 January 2027 in its minor version, the employer contribution for the sickness sector will be reduced from 4.05% to 3.55%, affecting around 330,000 businesses. A larger reduction of one unit could extend beyond the sickness sector and include employer contributions to EOPYY (National Organization for the Provision of Health Services) and DYPA (Public Employment Service). The main and supplementary pension contributions remain out of the plan, as does the employer contribution to the unemployment sector.
The apportionment scenario: this is what you need to watch
This is where the interests for you as an employee begin. Alongside the purely employer reduction, an alternative scenario provides for an equal sharing of a one-unit reduction: 0.5 unit from employer contributions and 0.5 unit from employee contributions, according to the model applied with the 2025 model.
- Model both scenarios before signing an offer. If you're negotiating a position that starts in early 2027, ask what your net salary would be under current rules AND what the employer expects if the split scenario is implemented. Any serious employer will have done the math.
- Compare offers based on total cost , not just gross. If two employers offer you 1,500 euros gross, the one operating in an industry that benefits more from the reduction in the sickness sector (services, hospitality, retail are labor-intensive and have to gain) has more room to transfer the savings as a raise, if they choose.
- Watch what the unions will ask for. Whether the reduction ends up being solely employer-sponsored or shared depends largely on union pressure and political connections by September. The question of distribution really remains open.
- Recalculate your net salary at the 980 euro threshold . If you earn at or near the minimum wage , the combined effect of the increase in the minimum wage to 980 euros and the potential reduction in employee contributions is what determines your real purchasing power in 2027, not each measure individually.
The main conclusion
A 0.5 to 1.0 percentage point reduction in social security contributions is not, in itself, life-changing money at any level of individual salary. What makes it matter is the design choice behind it. An employer-only reduction is a wage subsidy for 330,000 businesses; a shared reduction is a wage subsidy AND a small immediate increase for millions of workers. Same number in the title, very different distribution.
He watched the announcement in Thessaloniki in September. Then the partition, or lack thereof, becomes a reality.
